Suvarnabhumi Airport: Ground Improvement and Airfield Pavements
This project involved providing consultancy services for the design of ground improvement and airfield pavements for the 1st Midfield Satellite Aprons and the 3rd Runway (TRDG) at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan, Thailand. The client was New Bangkok International Airport Co., Ltd., with funding from the Royal Thai Government and JBIC. The applicant's contract was valued at 74.51 Million Baht, and the work took place from October 2004 to July 2005. SPAN Company Limited was part of a consortium that included Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick (Thailand) Ltd., MAA Consultants Co., Ltd., Southeast Asia Technology Co., Ltd., and Norconsult Civil Engineering Co., Ltd.
The project's scope included several major design components. This involved the design of ground improvement, airfield pavement, drainage, and visual aids for Runways 3 and their associated taxiways, covering an area of approximately 1,070,000 square meters. These designs are crucial for ensuring the stability, durability, and safe operation of the runways.
Additionally, the consortium was responsible for the design of ground improvement, airfield pavement, drainage, and visual aids for the North Central Aprons and the Second Cross Taxiways, encompassing roughly 943,000 square meters. The project also included the design of similar infrastructure for the Isolated Parking Apron. These critical designs collectively contribute to the overall functionality, safety, and efficiency of Suvarnabhumi Airport's extensive airfield facilities.
